Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second-Half Scores Lift Yeomen Over Mount Union

OBERLIN, Ohio - After playing a scoreless first, Oberlin College men's soccer found two second-half goals to sneak past the University of Mount Union Purple Raiders, 2-0.

Despite the scoreline going unchanged into the halftime intermission, the Yeomen had ample opportunity around goal in the opening 45 minutes. The Yeomen finished the frame with nine shots en route to a fierce offensive performance on Saturday night. The Crimson and Gold outshot the Purple Raiders 22-to-7 and placed six attempts on target compared to Mount's one.

Second-year Koryn Kraemer was called into action in the 24th after a blocked shot attempt and a strike that sailed over the crossbar by Mount's Ian Moorhead.

After two mishits, a timely block on an attempt from Jonah Blume-Kemkes and an errand try from Sam Weiss, the Yeomen began to trouble the Mount Union keeper. A powerful shot by Nick Wertman called Mount's netminder, Dylan Lias into question for the first time.

In the 31st, after a shot attempt from first-year Jack McMillin was blocked, Sam Weiss gathered the rebound, found just enough space and ripped what looked like the breakthrough goal. Unfortunately for the Oberlin native a well-placed Mount Union defender deflected the attempt leaving the scoreline at nil-nil.

Minutes later the Oberlin men appeared to have found the go-ahead score with a laser of a shot from outside the box from Nick Wertman. Wertman's attempt rattled off the left post keeping the scoreline locked at 0-0 through the first frame.

Despite not finding the back of the Mount Union goal in the first, it only took 2:53 into the second half for Oberlin to find the difference maker.

A brilliant string of passes by Blume-Kemkes and sophomore Trenton Bulucea into the Purple Raiders penalty area led to junior forward Timothy Williams banging home his second goal of the year.

The 1-0 Yeomen advantage would only last for 13 minutes as an incredibly well-struck ball from Blume-Kemkes flew past Lias. Following a foul by Mount Union, the Yeomen were awarded a free kick opportunity outside of the area. Right back Matthew Bach-Lombardo took the set piece and swung a ball into the box, where Blume-Kemkes was waiting to knock in the insurance goal.

The Crimson and Gold dominated possession in the second-half, most of which was played in Mount Union's defensive third.

As side from a few shots that skimmed the roof of the net, Kraemer was hardly tested in the final 45 minutes as he secured his third clean sheet of the year with one stop.

Oberlin men's soccer will return to action on Wednesday, September 21, when they travel to nearby Berea, Ohio to do battle with the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets.

Kickoff from Tressel Field inside of Finnie Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
