Oberlin, Ohio – The Grove City Wolverines arrived at Fred Shults Field on Wednesday evening with a perfect 5-0-0 record. They didn't leave that way as the Oberlin College men's soccer team dealt them their first loss of the season, earning a 3-2 win.
The win runs the Yeomen's record to 4-1 and snaps two-game losing streak to the Wolverines. Oberlin also moved to 2-0 at home and is 7-2 in front of its faithful dating back to the start of 2015.
After 45 minutes of action the two foes were deadlocked at 1-1, but the Yeomen would snatch the lead for good in the 48
th minute. It was senior
Sam Weiss who ripped a piercing left-footed strike into the net from 20 yards out to put the Yeomen out in front.
In the 52
nd minute sophomore
Trenton Bulucea's creative skills came to the forefront as he set up senior
Nick Wertman for his first goal of the year. The Westlake, Ohio, native now his 16 tallies on his career account. For Bulucea it was his second helper of the night.
With the two-goal advantage, the Yeomen settled in, but the Wolverines kept coming. In the 75
th Stephen Betteridge laced a shot from the right wing that hit off the back post and moments later he was denied by Yeomen keeper
Koryn Kraemer on another promising attempt.
The Wolverines would eventually cut the Oberlin cushion down to one in the 81
st minute when David Wurmlinger sent a cross to the middle where he found Dale Reese left unmarked for his fourth score of the year.
In the closing minutes the Yeomen backline would help preserve the win as shots by Betteridge and Blake Baer were blocked.
In the opening stanza the Yeomen had a collection of promising chances that were thwarted by the stingy rearguard of the Wolverines.
It would be the Wolverines who found the game's first goal as a misplay in the Yeomen's defensive third left Betteridge all alone against Kraemer. The Wolverines' senior would take two dribbles at Kraemer before beating him to his right side.
It was Weiss who provide the equalizer in the 33
rd minute as he worked his way into the middle of the box and ripped a shot that deflected off goalie Malcolm Blake's hands before trickling its way into the twine.
Both Blake and Kraemer finished with three saves each in the contest.
After taking just two shots in the first half Oberlin was much more aggressive in the final frame, triggering 10 more attempts to end the match with 12 shots compared to the visitor's 13. Oberlin did end with a slight 6-5 edge in shots on goal and worked its way to five corners compared to Grove City's three.
The Yeomen have now won three straight matches, mirroring their longest streak of the season in 2015. They will look to make it four in a row on Saturday night when they welcome the University of Mount Union to town for a 7 p.m. battle.
