WAYNESBURG, Pa. - Though the match was cut short due to an issue with the stadium lights, Oberlin men's soccer moved to 3-1 with a slim 1-0 victory over the Waynesburg Universtiy Yellow Jackets.
The Satuday night tilt was cut short by nearly 20 minutes due to a malfunction with the lights, but the Yeomen still got the result to go two-for-two during their Pennsylvania swing. After taking down Geneva College in a Friday night showdown, a tested Yeomen side found a way to win at Waynesburg. The game reached the 70-minute mark, which by rule makes it an official contest.
Oberlin was active offensively in the first half, firing 13 shots at the Waynesburg net, but only three found their mark. A
Sam Weiss corner in the second minute led to a shot by
Jonah Blume-Kemkes, but the attempt landed wide. Â
Despite Oberlin's ability to comfortably push into the final third throughout the match, it was the Yeomen's keeper
Koryn Kraemer who was called into action first in the 11th minute. Kraemer met a shot attempt from Waynesburg's Bryan Sontag to claim his first save of the game en route to three stops.
At 14:07,
Timothy Williams tested Waynesburg's keeper, James Snyder, for the first time. Snyder turned away the Yeoman's effort but Oberlin kept pressure on the Yellow Jackets' back line. The Oberlin men went on to trigger six shots in the following 11 minutes, half of which merited a response from Snyder.
The Yellow Jackets keeper stood tall throughout the opening half and kept the scoreline unchanged at the intermission after turning away a try from
Brian James late in the stanza.
Out of the break, the Yeomen didn't slow down as
Nick Wertman knocked a headed attempt at goal in the 52nd. Just over a minute later, all of their persistence finally paid off as
Adam Chazin-Gray cashed in on his team-best third goal of the season with assistant from Wertman.
After finding the difference maker, the Yeomen packed it in and played tough defense in what would turn out to be the closing minutes of the game.
Kraemer came up huge to secure his second clean sheet in as many days, turning away Waynesburg's Chad Palucka in the 66th minute. With 70:04 gone, the game was called sending the Yeomen to a 1-0 victory in the abbreviated Saturday showdown.
The Yeomen outshot the Yellow Jackets 16-to-6, with six of Oberlin's shots finding the target compared to just three for Waynesburg.
Wertman and James led the way for the Crimson and Gold with three shots each followed by Weiss, Williams, Chazin-Gray, Blume-Kemkes and first-year Jack McMillan who notched two.
Kraemer's three stops moves his season total to 13, while his two clean sheets in Pennsylvania were the first of the year for the sophomore.
Oberlin men's soccer and veteran skipper
Blake New will return to the Buckeye State to continue non-conference action.
The Yeomen will host Grove City College on Wednesday night under the lights of Fred Shults Field before welcoming the University of Mount Union on Saturday.
Kickoff between the Yeomen and Wolverinesis set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
