OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College men's soccer made it five consecutive victories in home openers as they scored early and often to move past the Heidelberg University Student Princes, 3-1.
The Yeomen dominated possession in the first half and got on the board early with their first goal of the year coming three minutes in.
After hustling into the Heidelberg penalty area,
Timothy Williams laced a low cross through the six-yard box that found the feet of
Sam Weiss. Weiss rapped a pass on to
Jonah Blume-Kemkes, who found the back of the 'Berg net.
With their go-ahead goal, the Oberlin men kept pressure on the Heidelberg back line. Three minutes later and with little room to maneuver, Weiss created space on the endline and ripped a curling shot to the far-side netting for a 2-0 advantage.
The two-goal lead would last for a while, but the Yeomen were hungry for more as they tacked on a third first-half goal in the 23rd minute.
Adam Chazin-Gray notched his first score of the year with skillful, connecting passes from Williams and defender
Matthew Bach-Lombardo.
The Oberlin men were deadly accurate in the first 45 minutes, placing five-of-seven shots on target. Second-year keeper,
Koryn Kraemer was only called upon once in the first half and finished with four saves on the day.
The Student Princes prevented Kraemer from earning his first clean sheet of the year with a tally in the 53rd minute. A well-placed pass from Heidelberg's Rodrigo Meza was received by Kyle Diaz, who knocked it into the twine.
Minutes later, Kraemer was called upon once more as Heidelberg pressured for another goal. A headed attempt at goal was blocked in front of net, and the put back was flung toward Kraemer, but the Westfield, New Jersey native stood tall.
With 20 minutes remaining in the opening matchup, an untimely challenge in the Oberlin box led to a Heidelberg penalty kick. The Berg's Andres Isea stepped up to take the penalty, but left Kramer unchallenged as he skied the shot over the frame of the goal.
On top of the Student Princes 3-1, the Yeomen kept the game under control and held the Berg to just two shots in the final 15 minutes to stave off a would be comeback and collect their first triumph of the year.
Despite the up-tempo offensive presence from the Yeomen early on, the two sides finished with 11-12 shots, with Oberlin coming out on top. Weiss led the way for the Yeomen with four strikes, three on target as he finished as the top point-getter with three.
Blume-Kemkes and senior midfielder
Nick Wertman finished behind Weiss with two shots each.
The Yeomen and headman
Blake New will pack up and hit the road for three matchups away from the confines of Fred Shults Field in the next nine days. First up, the Yeomen will battle with the always dangerous Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University on Saturday, September 3. Kickoff from Ada, Ohio is slated for 7 p.m.
