Oberlin, Ohio - Playing for the final time on the Philips Gym floor in 2016, the Oberlin College men's basketball team put forth a strong effort, but in the end it wasn't enough to knock-off No. 11 Ohio Wesleyan as the Bishops pulled away for a 93-75 win over the Yeomen.
Senior
Randy Ollie, who earned much praise from the home faithful throughout the evening, made his last home game count as he led the Oberlin attack with 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting and was 6-of-7 at the charity stripe. First-year
Eli Silverman-Lloyd as had a strong showing as he poured in a career-high 17 points and matched Ollie with a team-best six boards. Junior
Jack Poyle also had a solid bounce-back game, hitting 5-of-10 3-pointers as he posted 16 points on the night.
However, the Bishops high-powered offense was also on display with sophomore guard Nate Axelrod dropping in a game-high 30 points. Seth Clark added 17, while Ben Simpson netted a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
The game was much closer than the final score may indicate as their were seven lead changes and four ties along the way and the Bishops led by just two with 10 minutes to go.
A Silverman-Lloyd triple-hit at the 12:54 mark of the first half gave the Yeomen a brief 16-15 lead, but three straight Bishops' 3-pointers quickly put them back in front by eight, 24-16.
With 5:27 left in the period, Poyle's 4-point play tied the game at 34 as he hit a straight away three and was undercut on his landing to give him the bonus free throw. However, the Bishops would open up a six-point advantage and ultimately head into the intermission with a 47-42 cushion.
Oberlin opened the second half on a mini 6-0 spurt that was capped with another Poyle trifecta to put the Yeomen out in front 48-47. Over the next eight minutes of play no more than five points would separate the two teams as they continued to trade buckets.
The Bishops held a 67-65 lead midway through the second half and used an 8-0 run to open up a 10-point gap at the 6:51 mark. With just under four minutes to play, Oberlin chipped the deficit down to within six, 77-71, on Silverman-Lloyd's backdoor layup that was setup by one of
Nathan Cohen's six assists in the game.
Unfortunately, the Bishops would answer right back with an 11-2 run over the next 2:13 to effectively put the game out of reach.
The win moved OWU to 21-3 overall and 14-3 in the NCAC. The Yeomen have now dropped five out of their last six, falling to 12-12 overall and 7-10 in conference play.
The Bishops shot an even 50 percent in the win, cashing in 31-of-62 shots, which included a 13-of-31 (42.9%) showing from beyond the arc. They also deposited 18-of-20 free throws in the win.
Oberlin wasn't far behind, making 27-of-60 attempts for a 45-percent success rate. The Yeomen were 10-of-27 (37%) from long range and made 11 of the 13 charity tosses they hoisted for an 84.6-percent clip.
The Yeomen will conclude the regular season on Saturday evening when they travel to The College of Wooster. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
