New Concord, Ohio – Seniors
Nathan Cohen and
Jack Poyle combined for 34 points, but it wasn't enough as the Oberlin College men's basketball suffered its third straight defeat, falling 87-73 at Muskingum on Wednesday night.
Cohen dropped in 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while Poyle finished with 15 points on a 5-of-9 showing. They each added four steals to the cause. Sophomore
Eric Holt was the only other Yeoman to reach double figures as he chipped in 11 points off the bench in 15 minutes of work.
The Muskies used some sharp shooting to down the Yeomen as they had four players in double digits led by a game-high 22 points from Jarrell Marsh. Muskingum shot 55.4 percent with 31 makes on 56 shots, which included a blistering 54.5 percent success rate from beyond the arc as they cashed in 12-of-22 triple tries.
Getting off to a slow start has turned into a troubling trend for the Yeomen and tonight as no different as the Muskies opened up a 21-7 lead midway through the first half. The Yeomen would respond with a 13-5 run over the next 5:39 to shrink the gap down to five, 25-20. However, Muskingum would regain control and ultimately take a 37-24 lead into the intermission.
Early in the second half the Muskies would increase their advantage out to 20, 51-31, on a Marcus Dempsey layup. The Yeomen were never able to threaten the eventual outcome, as Muskingum would lead by no less than 17 points until the very end of the contest.
The Yeomen dropped back to 1-4 on the season, while the Muskies remained unbeaten, as they are now 4-0.
Oberlin shot 39.7 percent from the floor, hitting on 27-of-68 shots, which included an 8-of-26 (30.8%) showing from 3-point range.
The Yeomen will have another tough test on Saturday night as they travel to Division I Youngstown State for an 8 p.m. clash with the Penguins. The game can be seen live on the
