Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Yeomen Hang Tough at Youngstown State

Youngstown, OH - The Oberlin College men's basketball team hung with Division I Youngstown State for much of the evening, but in the end the Penguins were able to pull away for a, 87-72, victory on Saturday night at the Beeghly Center.

Oberlin had four players finish in double figures with senior Nathan Cohen leading the way with 12 points as he cashed in 4-of-9 3-point attempts. Classmate Scott Miller also dialed in on three triples en route to finishing with a season-high 11 points off the bench. Sophomore Eli Silverman-Lloyd matched Miller with 11, while Jack Poyle chipped in with 10 - all of which came in the first half.

Oberlin hoisted a season-high 45 3-pointers, dropping in a season-best 16 for a 35.6 percent success rate.

The Yeomen used the long ball to stay within striking distance of the Penguins throughout the opening half. Oberlin triggered 28 of their 38 shots in the half from beyond the arc and made a 11 of them in the period.

The Yeomen trailed 11-5 in the early going, but they would use four triple hits to tie the game at 19 with the final trifecta of the run coming courtesy of Eric Holt with 10:54 left in the session.

YSU would settle in and open up a 10-point lead, 38-28, with 3:37 left in the half, but the Yeomen kept coming. Oberlin would close the session with a 13-5 run to shrink the halftime deficit down to two, 43-41. The spurt featured three-balls from Cohen, Zach Moo Young and Poyle.

The Penguins would create separation early in the second half, opening the session on a 12-4 run to grab a 55-45 advantage with 15:32 remaining in the game.

The Yeomen lost their long-range target in the second half as they made just one of their first 10 triple-tries in the period. The array of misfires coupled with the Penguins hot second-half shooting allowed them to open up a 21-point lead, 75-54, with just over seven minutes left in the game.

Oberlin continued to play to the final whistle as a pair of threes from Miller had the gap down to 15 at the 4:20 mark, but the Yeomen would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Five Penguins ended in double figures, led by a game-high 20 from Francisco Santiago who also added 10 assists in the win.

YSU shot 50.8 percent (33-of-65) from the floor, while the Yeomen checked in at 38.6 percent (27-of-70).

The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 1-5 on the year, while the Penguins head to Michigan State on Tuesday night with a record of 5-4.

Oberlin returns home and gets back into NCAC play on Wednesday night when it welcomes Denison University to town for a 7:30 p.m. conference clash.
