Wooster, Ohio - The seventh-ranked Scots of Wooster showed why they are one of the best teams in the country as they cruised by the Oberlin College Yeomen, 104-65, in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday night at Timken Gymnasium.
Senior
Jack Poyle was a bright spot for the Yeomen as he finished with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Sophomore
Eric Holt added a career-high 14 points to go along with a career-best seven rebounds in the setback.
Rookie
Andre Campbell added six points on 3-of-6 shooting in his first-collegiate game to go along with four boards, while sophomore
Eli Silverman-Lloyd and freshman
Christian Fioretti matched Campbell's efforts with six points each of their own. Newcomer
Joshua Friedkin aided the Yeomen effort with four points and four points, while senior
Zach Meyers was the team's top distributor with a team-high five assists.
The Yeomen struggled from the floor, hitting 39.1 percent of their shots with 27 makes on 69 attempts. On the flip side the Scots connected at a 62.3 percent clip, dialing in on 39-of-62 of their attempts.
The Yeomen made just one of their first 12 shots as the Scots opened up a 15-2 lead less than six minutes into the contest. Later trailing 26-8, the Yeomen tried to claw their way back into the game using an 8-2 run to get within 12, 28-16, with 6:46 left in the first half. However, the Scots quickly regained control of the game and ultimately took a 49-26 lead into the intermission.
With the eventual outcome never in the doubt, the Yeomen continued to fight but had no answers in how to slow down the Scots as they cruised to the victory.
Danyon Hempy led Wooster with 12 points as they had five different players finish in double figures and 14 players score in all. The Scots size advantage was prevalent was they finished with a 46-23 advantage in rebounding and had a 60-24 margin in points in the paint.
The Yeomen will look to regroup as they return home to host Alfred State on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
