Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Yeomen Nip Alfred State in Home Opener

Oberlin, Ohio – Senior Jack Poyle banked in a jumper from the left wing with 1.6 seconds left to play to lift the Oberlin College men's basketball team a, 70-68, victory over the visiting Alfred State University Pioneers on Sunday afternoon.

A pair of free throws by Wade Franklin with 32 ticks left tied the game at 68 and in turn gave the Yeomen a chance to hold the ball for the last shot. After letting nearly 20 seconds expire, Oberlin started the motion with 10 seconds to go with Joshua Friedkin and Poyle working up top. Poyle was able to create space to his left to give him self the game-winning look from 12 feet out.

A native of Avon, Ohio, Poyle finished with a game-high 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting, which included a 4-of-9 effort from 3-point territory.

Sophomore Eli Silverman-Lloyd matched a career-best with 17 points, and in his first-career start, Friedkin impressed with 13 points and team-high four assists. Rookie classmate Andre Campbell added six points, two blocks and four steals to go along with a game-high eight rebounds.

Oberlin led the entire game until the 4:33 mark of the second half when Marquis Edwards buried a long triple-hit to make it a 63-62 game in favor of Alfred State. A pair of free throws from Friedkin would quickly put Oberlin back out in front and they would never trail again.

Clinging to a 68-66 lead in the closing minutes, it was the Yeomen's defense that came through in a big way. Friedkin stepped in a front of a driving Marcus Rhett to draw a charge that wiped out his would-be-tying layup, and on the next Pioneer possession Campbell rejected a layup attempt from Tyrone Davis to keep the Yeomen cushion intact. In all, the Yeomen forced the Pioneers into 26 turnovers that turned in 24 points and had 14 steals in the game.

The Yeomen got off to a fast start, opening up a 12-2 lead less than four minutes into the game, but the Pioneers would settle in and use a 9-0 run to shrink the deficit down to one, 12-11, with 13:36 left in the opening frame.

Oberlin would extend the margin out to eight, 26-18, but the Pioneers closed the half strong and went into the locker room down by just four, 33-29.

The Yeomen were unable to create separation in the second half, as their lead never reached double digits over the final 20 minutes of play. The largest advantage of the stanza came at the 9:09 mark as Friedkin hit a pair of free throws to make it 58-49, but Alfred State quickly erased that with a 14-4 response run over the next five minutes of action to setup the thrilling finish.

Oberlin shot 37.7 percent, hitting 23-of-63 attempts, while Alfred State checked in at 42.3 percent with 22 makes on 52 shots.

Oberlin returns to action on Friday afternoon as it plays host to Kalamazoo College at 5 p.m.
