MEADVILLE, PA - Oberlin College volleyball notched its first North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the 2016 campaign on Wednesday night with a shift, 3-0, (25-23, 25-20, 25-14) win over the Allegheny College Gators.
The Yeowomen took the one-set advantage after squeezing out a 25-23 win in the lid-lifter.
The Yeowomen kept on rolling as the Gators lost offensive momentum to hand over the middle set to Oberlin, 25-20. With the two set advantage, the Yeowomen pacified the Gators with a dominant, 25-14 showing in the third to capture the first conference win of the year.
"I'm proud of the way we played tonight and grinded out a win after a few tough losses in the conference," said head coach
Erica Rau. "It was a team effort that got us the win and we feel energized heading into the weekend and OWU."
It was a team effort that lifted the Yeowomen out of the basement of the conference standings as
Sara Chang led the threat, followed by
Dana Thomas finishing in double-figures and two Yeowomen tallying nine kills against the Gators.
Chang's team-high 11 kills accompanies her team-high 20 assists, elevating her season-total to a team-leading 217. Senior
Meredith Leung shared responsibilities on the setup with 13 assists and two service aces and seven digs in the win.
Thomas collected ten kills out of the middle to couple with two service aces. Oberlin was commanding at the service line, tallying 13 as a team, led by first-year standout
Lexi Mitchell with four. Chang followed suit with three. Mitchell notched nine kills, along side of
Ave Spencer who combined her nine kills against the Gators with one assist and four digs.
Second-year libero
Emily Kelkar led the Crimson and Gold with 13 digs in the victory, extending her season total to 162, marking a single-season career best.
The victory in the Keystone State moves the Yeowomen to 5-9 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC as they continue league play over on Saturday, October 8, when they travel to central Ohio to grapple with the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops. The opening serve from Delaware, Ohio is scheduled for 1 p.m.
