Oberlin, Ohio – The visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots held off a surging Yeowomen side as they left town with a 4-3 win to sour the Senior Day celebration for the Oberlin College Field Hockey team on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the match the Yeowomen honored their seven senior members:
Aditi Banerjee,
Julia Birenbaum,
Maureen Coffey,
Ariana Enzerink,
Maggie Gossiaux,
Emma Hahn, and
Jennifer Krakower.
Oberlin used the energy from the pre-game festivities to score less than three minutes into the contest. Coffey got inside the circle and ripped a shot off the pads of Wooster goalie Lida LeVine, but Birenbaum was right there for the put-back follow for her first-career goal.
The Scots would find the equalizer early in the eighth minute as Rachel Wetzel maneuvered her way through the Oberlin backline, scoring her fourth goal of the year.
As the opening frame wore on, each team had a plethora of chances to break the stalemate, but both keepers stood tall. LeVine had four first-half saves while Gossiaux ended with seven in the first 35 minutes of play.
The Scots would take the lead five minutes into the second half as Kerry O'Connor broke free on the back post and finished off a nice lead-pass from Leah Prescott. Wooster would grab a 3-1 cushion in the 49
th minute as Kayla O'Connor cashed in a cross from her sister Kerry for her 12
th tally of the year.
Oberlin continued to fight and would cut the deficit in half five minutes later when Enzerink sent in a piercing service from the top of the arc that Coffey redirected into the cage for her seventh score of the year.
A response goal by Prescott had the Scots up by a pair again, until late in the match. A scrum in front off the goal ultimately ended with
Luisa McGarvey pushing in her first collegiate goal with the help of a
Libby Royer assist.
With less than four minutes left on the clock, Oberlin worked to find the equalizer to hopefully force overtime, but unfortunately nothing came to fruition.
The Scots ended the match with a 22-17 advantage in shots, which included an 18-11 edge in shots on goal. However, Oberlin triggered six corners compared to the Scots' four.
Gossiaux finished with 14 saves to run her season total to 172 while running her career account to 680.
Oberlin will conclude its season tomorrow afternoon when it host Concordia University of Wisconsin at 1 p.m.
