Yeowomen Fall in Sunday Showdown

OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College field hockey couldn't ride the momentum of their win on Saturday as they fell at home, 2-0, to the Wittenberg University Tigers.

The loss drops the Yeowomen to 1-15 overall and 1-12 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

After yesterday's triumph over Ohio Wesleyan, 3-1, the Yeowomen just didn't have the magic to stave off an offensive onslaught from their counterparts from Springfield.

The Tigers were an attacking juggernaut, firing 30 shots, 23 on target, though the Yeowomen held their own with 13 shots, nine on frame. Senior goalie Maggie Gossiaux tied a season-high in an incredible performance between the pipes. Gossiaux posted 20 stops against the Tigers to lift her season total to 159, with a record of 1-13 overall.

The Yeowomen and Tigers exchanged penalty corners and attempts at goal in the opening 35-minute frame, but neither side could find a breakthrough score.

Gossiaux had the shutout secured after a half of play, but the Tigers pounced early in the second stanza. After Wittenberg's Maddie Goelz rifled a shot into the arch, Blaine Donnelly redirected the shot past Gossiaux in goal.

About a minute and a half later, the Tigers tacked on their second score of the match. On a counter attack, The Tiger's Riley Trexler charged into the Oberlin arch and flung a shot over a sliding Gossiaux.

The Yeowomen had scoring opportunities in the later minutes of regulation but stifling defense and a combined effort from Wittenberg goalies, Josefien vanden Berg and Allie Purvis, held the Crimson and Gold scoreless.

Maureen Coffey, coming off of a two-goal performance yesterday, led the Oberlin attack with six shots, four on target, followed by Ariana Enzerink, who fired four attempts, all but one on goal.

The Yeowomen will not play a midweek match and instead prepare for the College of Wooster Fighting Scots who invade the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex on Saturday, October 29.

The Yeowomen will celebrate senior day against the Scots before hosting an Autism Awareness game on Sunday afternoon.

Action on Saturday morning between the Yeowomen and Fighting Scots is slated for 11 a.m.
