Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Yeomen Stumble at Ohio Wesleyan

Delaware, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team was unable tame the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops, falling 3-0 on Saturday evening at Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

It wasn't cause of a lack of chances – the Yeomen certainly had their opportunities, but the difference was the Bishops made the most of theirs.

Entering the night the Yeomen were in second place in the NCAC standings at 5-1-0 for 15 points, while the Bishops found themselves on unfamiliar ground on the outside looking in at 3-1-2 with 11 points. However, tonight's result will go a long way in determining how the top four ultimately shakes out with two matches left.

In the opening half Sam Weiss and Nick Wertman each had dangerous threats in the first 29 minutes that were thwarted, and in the 30th minute a tally would finally go up on the board – just on the wrong side of the ledger. Brady Whittekind finished off a cross from the right side playing in the feed from Adam Yingling.

Oberlin had ample opportunity to find the first-half equalizer, but all five of its attempts were off the mark as the Bishops took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

Just minutes into the second half the Bishops would double their lead. Catching Koryn Kraemer off his line, Nick Norman sent a shot toward goal that was initially turned away by the Yeomen defense, but Phoenix Neitzelt was there to head home the rebound for his fifth goal of the year.

The Yeomen had their response as shots Jonah Blume-Kemkes and Jake Crim looked promising, but Ben Farynowski stood tall to deny both attempts.

OWU would leave no doubt in the eventual outcome as Kyle Baum cashed in his eighth score of the season – finishing off a nice through-ball from Yingling in the 67th minute.

The Yeomen out-shot the Bishops 11-6 in the first half, but had just two second-half attempts as OWU ended with an 18-13 margin in total shots. However, Oberlin had a slight 8-7 edge in corners with the Bishops earning all of theirs in the second half.

Kraemer finished with three saves for the Yeomen.

Oberlin will look to get back on track when it concludes its three-match homestand on Tuesday night at Hiram College. The first touch is set for 7:30 p.m.
