HIRAM, Ohio - Oberlin College men's soccer made it lucky number 13 on the year as a pair of second-half goals lifted the Crimson and Gold over the Hiram College Terriers, 2-0.
A slow start for the Yeomen's attack was remedied with two goals on four shots in the closing 45 minutes to push the Oberlin men to 13-3-1 overall. The Yeomen improve to 6-2-0 in NCAC play with just one bout left in the regular season.
The offensive action was steady going through the opening frame with the Yeomen firing five shots with three on target, but no difference maker. In the Oberlin goal,
Koryn Kraemer went virtually unchallenged in Hiram, facing just one shot on goal from the Terriers. The clean sheet performance on Tuesday night marks Kraemer's sixth of the year and elevates his season-save total to 75.
The Terriers netminder, Luke Wilhelm, kept the scoreless draw for nearly 70 minutes, but in the 69th,
Timothy Williams had other thoughts. Williams and
Jonah Blume-Kemkes connected for William's fourth score of the year, marking Kemkes first setup of the campaign.
Just over 10 minutes later, the Crimson and Gold broke into the final third once more and claimed an insurance goal. The Yeomen's leading scorer,
Nick Wertman tallied his 13th of the year with a timely pass from
Jack McMillin. Wertman flung the touch into the upper 90.
The Yeomen packed it in and cruised to the 2-0 victory as the Terriers offensive hiccups continued through the rest of regulation.Â
Wertman's 13th score of the year pushes him to a team-best 29 points with three assists. His score against the Terriers also leaves Wertman in a tie atop the league standings with DePauw's Julian Gonzalez.
After the completion of Tuesday's matches, the Yeomen sit comfortably in third in the NCAC standings with 18 points. The Wabash Little Giants sit one-point ahead in second, while the Kenyon Lords are atop the table with 21 points.
The Yeomen will host the Big Red of Denison University in the 2016 season finale this coming Saturday, October 29.
Action from the confines of Fred Shults Field is slated for 7 p.m. as the Yeomen celebrate Senior Night before taking on their foes from Granville.
