Oberlin, Ohio – Four Yeomen scored in double figures as the Oberlin College men's basketball team knocked off the Hiram College Terriers 75-67 on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
Junior
Jack Poyle led the charge with 21 points, while classmate
Nathan Cohen added 15 points to accompany his six-rebound effort.
Zach Meyers stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, tied a career-high with seven assist and ripped down a career-best eight boards. Senior center Randy completed the double-digit scoring foursome with 11 points, doing most of his damage at the free throw line where he went 7-of-10.
Oberlin opened the game on a 7-0 spurt, but the Terriers quickly settled in and rallied to grab a brief 15-14 lead with just under 12 minutes left to play in the half. The Yeomen answered right back with a 13-0 run to take a 27-15 lead at the 8:36 mark.
Hiram battled to shrink the gap down to eight, 29-21, but the Yeomen closed out the first half strong and took a comfortable 42-28 advantage into the locker room.
In the second half it certainly wasn't easy for the Yeomen as the Terriers increased their defensive pressure and worked their way back into the game. Trailing by as many as 18, the Terriers chipped the Yeomen lead down to six, 53-47, with 12:02 left to play.
A pair of Poyle charity tosses gave Oberlin some breathing room as they pushed the lead back out to 11, 61-50, with 9:01 on the clock, but Hiram kept coming. A Kelvin Jones layup at the 2:30 mark again had the margin at just two possession at 68-62, however, the Yeomen made five of six free throws over the next 50 seconds to increase the lead to 73-64.
A Trey Sanders 3-pointer with 46 ticks left would make it just a six-point game, and after turning it over the ensuing possession, the Yeomen stole it right back to help secure the win.
The victory moved the Yeomen to 8-6 overall and evened up their conference mark at 4-4. After winning eight straight, Hiram has now lost its last two games, falling to 11-4 overall and 5-3 in the NCAC.
Oberlin will have a short turnaround as it heads to Illinois College Institute of Technology for a Martin Luther King Day matinée. Tip-off against the Scarlet Hawks is set for 2 p.m.
