Yeomen Cruise in Final Non-Conference Game

Chicago, Ill – The Oberlin College men's basketball team closed out its non-conference schedule in commanding fashion, easily defeating Illinois Institute of Technology, 81-61, on Monday afternoon at the Keating Sporting Center.

A total of 11 different Yeomen scored in the game, led by junior Nathan Cohen who finished with 16 points and six rebounds. The San Francisco, California, native, who went 4-of-5 from 3-point range, has scored in double-figures in nine straight games.

Classmate Jack Poyle added 15 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting performance, which included a 3-of-4 effort from beyond the arc.  Senior center Randy Ollie contributed 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

After surrendering the first bucket of the game, Cohen dialed in on one of his four triple-hits and the Yeomen would never trail again.  Clinging to a 20-15 lead with 8:27 left in the opening half, Oberlin would go on a 13-5 run that featured a pair of threes from Cohen and one from Poyle to increase the margin to 33-20.

A dunk from Ollie with 40 ticks left in the stanza increased the lead out to 16 and the Yeomen ultimately went into the break with a 40-26 advantage.

A 3-pointer early in the second half gave the Yeomen their first 20-point lead of the game at 46-26. Oberlin would not take its foot off the gas, increasing its margin to as many as 32, 68-36, on Poyle's long-range three with 7:09 left to play.

With the final outcome never in doubt, Head Coach Isaiah Cavaco was able to go deeper into his bench with multiple freshmen setting career-highs. Eric Holt (7), Nile Godfrey (6) and Josiah Walker (4) all had their best collegiate scoring performances.

Anthony Mosley led the Scarlet Hawks with a game-high 23 points, while Jake Bruns added 13 in the loss.

Oberlin, which shot 51.7-percent (30-of-58) from the floor, has now won three straight and moved to 9-6 overall. IIT dropped to 2-16 on the season.

The Yeomen will have a much tougher test when they return to NCAC action on Wednesday night at No. 8 Ohio Wesleyan. The Bishops set atop the league standings at 14-1 overall and 7-1 in league play. Their only blemish of the season came in the form of a 74-72 loss to Hiram on December 12. Tip-time for the Yeomen and Bishops is set for 8 p.m.
