ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Oberlin College field hockey traveled to upstate New York to open the 2015 campaign against the University of Rochester. With over fifty shots against the Oberlin defense the Yellow Jackets bested the Yeowomen, 6-1, in the lid-lifter.
It was a long day between the pipes for junior keeper
Maggie Gossiaux who opened the year with 30 saves against Rochester. The Yellow Jackets fired 51 shots on the afternoon with 37 hitting the target.
The Yellow Jackets drew first blood in the 8
th minute with a tap in from the left side by Nicole Cerza. A Callie Fisher score moved Rochester ahead 2-0 before the Yeowomen found the back of the net.
At the 27:25 mark, junior
Maureen Coffey banged home the lone Oberlin goal of the matchup. Coffey rapped a shot towards goal, which Rochester keeper, Tara Lamberti, turned away. Coffey received her own rebound and placed the second chance opportunity into the back of the net just before the close of the first half.
Trailing 2-1 at the start of the second half, the Yeowomen surrendered another Fisher goal in the 38
th minute. In the 57
th minute Fisher knocked in her third of the game to move Rochester in front 4-1.
Yellow Jacket scores in the 58

th minute put the game out of reach for the Yeowomen as they suffered their first loss of the season.
Coffey led the Oberlin offensive effort with two shots, both on target. Junior
Julia Birenbaum and first-year
Amelia Huang each tallied one shot on goal on Saturday afternoon.
The Yeowomen will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on St. John Fisher College at 1 p.m.
