Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end, falling in straight sets to Hiram College on Wednesday night at Philips Gym. The Yeowomen were upended 25-18, 25-21 and 25-22.
The Terriers high-powered offense was on display, hitting .393 for the match. However, Oberlin kept close throughout with an attack percentage of .210.
Ave Spencer led Oberlin with 10 kills, while reining NCAC Player of the Week
Jillian Hostetler added eight. Middle hitter
Dana Thomas chipped in with seven.
The Yeowomen looked sluggish from the start and never really threatened in the opening set, but certainly had their opportunities to win the next two games.
Oberlin had a 15-12 lead in hand midway through the second game, but the Terriers battled back to even the score at 15. Overall there were six ties and three lead changes in the set. A kill by Marissa Jay would put the Terriers out in front 18-17 and they would never trail the rest of the way.
In the final set Oberlin held a 15-10 lead, but following a Hiram timeout to regroup, the Terriers would go on a 7-0 run to take a 17-15 advantage of their own. Hiram would extended its lead to four, 20-16, before the Yeowomen fight back to within one, 23-22, but would get no closer.
Krista Langhans dropped in four of the Yeowomen's six aces in the match.
Molly Powers led OC with 10 digs, while
Meredith Leung added four to go along with 32 assists.
The Yeowomen are back in action on Saturday when they travel west to DePauw University. The first serve is set for 12 p.m.
