Yeomen Push Past BW in Final Non-Conference Tune-Up

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-1 road win at Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday night.

The victory was the Yeomen's fifth in their last six matches, as they will open conference play on the weekend with an overall record of 6-2.

Senior standout John Ingham continued his torrid start to the season, registering points 19 and 20 on his ninth goal of the year just under three minutes into the match. The goal moved his career account to 32 and raised his all-time points total to 75.

The Yellow Jackets would find the equalizer in early in the 15th minute on Jack Shirley's second score of the season.

It remained even at 1-1 heading into the intermission, but early in the second half the Yeomen would deposit the eventual game-winning goal. It came courtesy of junior Nick Wertman as he found the back of the net for the first time in 2015 after scoring five goals in each of his first two seasons in the crimson and gold. First-year Andrew Puchala set him up for the score, registering his first-career assist.

With 35 minutes still left on the clock, the Yeomen were able to keep the Yellow Jackets in check. However, BW did create two dangerous chances as a header from Craig Wallace in the 60th minute hit the crossbar and later in the session Connor English denied Ryan Hassell's shot in the 86th minute.

English, who earned his first start of the season in goal, finished with just two saves as only three of BW's 12 shots were on frame. Oberlin triggered 13 shots on the night with seven on goal.

The Yeomen worked their way to seven corners, while the Yellow Jackets had just one.

Oberlin will travel west on Saturday to begin NCAC play at DePauw University. The first touch is set for 2:30 p.m.
