Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Yeomen Cruise Past Mavericks

OBERLIN, Ohio – Oberlin College men's soccer found another positive result in their second consecutive Sunday afternoon fixture, this time grounding the Medaille College Mavericks, 6-1.

As a unit, the Yeomen outplayed the Mavericks in every facet. Offensively, head coach Blake New's squad tallied 30 shots to Medaille's 11, with 16 Oberlin shots landing on frame. The Yeomen were active in the offensive third earning four corner opportunities compared to the Maverick's one.

The Oberlin defense smothered the Mavericks, allowing just two shots on goal. As a result of the stellar play of the Oberlin back line, first-year Koryn Kraemer was called upon only twice against Medaille.

The Yeomen began their six-goal performance with an early score from junior Sam Weiss in the 9th minute. Senior forward Louis Naiman fed Weiss with a ground pass in to the middle, where Weiss knocked a shot past Medaille keeper Callum Christie.

Oberlin took a 3-nil advantage in the 25th minute after senior midfielder Slade Gottlieb notched two goals in less than four minutes. The first tally came when sophomore defender Matthew Bach-Lombardo played a long ball into the middle and the head of Timothy Williams, who laid a soft pass to Gottlieb. The Alpharetta, Georgia native laced a shot over Christie and into the back of the net.

The second Gottlieb score came off of another Williams assist. Williams took on a Medaille defender and beat his marker into the right side of the penalty area where he ripped a ground pass across frame and into Gottlieb for a tap in opportunity.

Jonah Blume-Kemkes found the fourth Oberlin score of the game in the 33rd minute before Weiss registered the fifth Oberlin goal of the first half on an assist from senior Dan Lev.

After taking a 5-0 shutout into the halftime break, senior, leading-scorer John Ingham scored his first of the match and eighth goal of the season less than two minutes into the second stanza.

On top of the Mavericks, 6-0, Medaille finally snuck a shot past Kraemer in the 51st minute to ruin the young keeper's chance at his second clean sheet of the year. It was the Mavericks Nick DuMond from Anthony SaySay that spoiled the Oberlin shutout.

Neither side managed to find a goal in the final 39 minutes leaving the Yeomen to fly away with a 6-1 victory.

The win over Medaille advances the Yeomen to 5-2-0 overall as look ahead to Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday, September 23. Kickoff from Finnie Stadium in Berea, Ohio is slated for 7:30 p.m.
