OBERLIN, Ohio – After trouncing Waynesburg, 8-0, Friday night, the Oberlin College men's soccer team secured three first-half goals to maneuver past the Earlham College of Quakers, 4-1.
The Yeomen found the back of the Quaker net early and often as the first score came in the second minute from senior
John Ingham. After receiving the ball in the middle, he looked to pass, but instead sent a chip shot into the left upper 90, out of reach of the Quaker keeper, Nicola Manni.
After finding the first goal of the game,
Timothy Williams and
Louis Naiman hooked up for the second Oberlin score. In the 16
th, Naiman placed a long cross from the right side to the chest of Williams in the middle. Manni gave chase and came off of his line, but Williams won the race to the 50/50 ball and tapped it into the back of the Earlham goal.
Leading 2-0, the Yeomen tallied their third unanswered goal with a little help from Ingham. The Jacksonville, Florida native dribbled up the right side in to the Oberlin offensive third. He took on his would-be defender and beat his marker into the penalty area, where he placed a shot past Manni, in to the right side netting for his sixth tally of the year.
The Quakers would not go quietly in the first frame as they kept up the offensive pressure. On a miscue from the Oberlin defense and first-year keeper
Koryn Kraemer, Quaker forward Nicholas Dey sent a deflected ball about 35 yards out. Dey lobbed a shot over Kraemer, who was out of net, and in to put the scoreline at 3-1 in Oberlin's favor heading into the half-time break.
The first portion of the second stanza went by without a whole lot of offensive action from either side.
At the 27:12 mark, Ingham nearly completed his second hat trick in as many games. After taking on a defender, the senior standout drew a foul just outside the penalty area, creating a free kick in a high-scoring area. Ingham took the set piece opportunity and rattled it off of the left post keeping the score at 3-1.
In the 70
th minute, Williams tried to double up on a free kick opportunity. Sophomore
Matthew Bach-Lombardo connected with Williams on a 40-yard free kick in to the middle of the box, but Manni stopped the Williams attempt on net.
Williams inevitably found his second of the match late in the 86
th minute, firing a shot on goal, which Manni turned away to the feet of senior midfielder
Slade Gottlieb. Gottlieb dribbled nearly to the endline before ripping a ground pass back into the middle to the feet of Williams who successfully tapped home the open net opportunity.
As a unit, the Oberlin men outplayed the Quakers offensively, outshooting Earlham 25-7. Oberlin was awarded five corners while offering no corner opportunities to Earlham.
Kraemer missed out on his second clean sheet of the season, but finished with two saves, both of which came in the second half.
Ingham led the offensive charge with two goals from nine shots, five of which were on target. Williams was deadly accurate finishing with two scores from seven shots, six of which were on frame. Williams' pair of goals against the Quakers brings his season total to four.
Their triumph on Sunday moves the Yeomen to 4-1 overall as they head to Grove City, Pennsylvania for a midweek matchup with Grove City College. Kickoff on Wednesday, September 16, between the Wolverines and Yeomen is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
