Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team appeared to be in cruise control with a 2-0 lead in hand and five-point advantage midway through the third set, but the visiting Ohio Christian University Trailblazers stormed back to steal away the match 3-2.
The Yeowomen took the first two games by identical 25-19 counts and had leads of 14-9 and 19-15 in the third before OCU rallied to tie the game at 20-20 before ultimately winning it 29-27 to feed off a potential Oberlin sweep.
In the fourth set the Yeowomen never led as the Trailblazers used the momentum to tie the match at two games each. In the decisive fifth set the Yeowomen held a 9-5 lead, but could not finish the job. Oberlin had match point with a 14-13 lead, but an attack error would once again square the match. An Oberlin ball handling error and an ace for Olivia Davis would ultimately end the match and leave the Yeowomen shocked.
Four Yeowomen finished with double-digit kills with
Claudia Scott leading the way with 19.
Ave Spencer hammered home 16, while
Jillian Hostetler and
Dana Thomas added 10 each.
Oberlin dropped in 15 aces, led by
Krista Langhans who finished with seven.
Meredith Leung recorded 53 assists and a team-high 22 digs.
After hitting .333 and .237 in the first two sets, the Yeowomen completely fell out of rhythm as they had 26 kills and 26 errors over the final three sets.
The Yeowomen will be back in action next Saturday on the campus of Wooster where they will take on Albion and Muskingum.
