Westerville, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team lifted the curtain on the 2015 season by defeating Otterbein University, 2-1, on a hot and muggy evening in Westerville, Ohio.
It was senior
John Ingham who put the Yeomen out in front in the 76th minute to give Oberlin its fourth consecutive win in season-opening matches. The goal marked the 24
th of Ingham's career.
The Cardinals wasted no time in jumping on the Yeomen early as Ross Pfeil took an assist from Reid Wolfe and sent one past rookie keeper
Koryn Kraemer, who made his first collegiate start. The first-year backstop from Westfield, New Jersey, settled in nicely the rest of the way and finished with three saves.
The Yeomen would add the equalizer in the 20
th minute as freshman
Trenton Bulucea opened up his collegiate account, receiving a cross into the box from
Adam Chazin-Gray and sending it past Cardinals' keeper Mack Stamper.
The game would remain knotted for the next 55 minutes until Ingham broke through to put the Yeomen on top for good. Oberlin would then buckle down in the defensive third; holding the Cardinals to just one shot the rest of the way.
The Yeomen finished with a 13-10 edge in shots, which included a 5-4 margin in shots on goal. They also earned five corner kicks compared to Otterbein's two.
Sam Weiss led the Yeomen with four shots, one of which was on goal.
Oberlin will be back in action on Friday night when they take on Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. The first touch is set for 7 p.m. PST / 10 p.m. EST. The west coast swing will continue on Sunday afternoon when the Yeomen and Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer square off at 4 p.m. PST / 7 p.m. EST.
