Houghton, N.Y. – Jack Poyle scored a career-high 29 points, but it wasn't enough as the Oberlin College men's basketball team dropped a 95-86 decision on the road at Houghton College on Friday night.
Poyle finished 9-of-19 from the floor, but was just 2-of-11 from beyond the arc. However, the junior from Avon, Ohio, was impressive at the free throw line where he was 9-of-11.
Zach Meyers added 14 points, while senior center
Randy Ollie was one rebound shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine boards.
Matt Walker also produced his second straight game in double figures with 11 points.
The Highlanders opened up a 10-point lead in the first half, but back-to-back triples from Walker and
Eli Silverman-Lloyd cut the Houghton lead down to four, 29-25, with 4:58 left in the session.
The Yeomen would shrink their deficit down to as a low as three, but the Highlanders ultimately took a 40-34 cushion into the locker room.
The Highlanders built up a 20-point lead, 75-55, with 7:52 left in the game, but the Yeomen wouldn't go down without a fight.
After going down by as many 23, the Yeomen ripped off a 15-3 run to make it a 82-72 Highlander lead with 3:05 left on the clock. Oberlin continued its comeback bid, shrinking the gap down to four, 90-86, with 43 seconds left to play, but the clock would eventually run out on the Yeomen.
Five players scored in double figures for the Highlanders, led by 18 from Phil Pellegrino.
The Yeomen will look to get back on track tomorrow at Alfred State College. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
