BETHANY, W.V. – The Oberlin College field hockey team earned its first victory for first-year head coach
Tiffany Saunders as they squeezed out a tight, 2-1, win over the Bethany College Bison on Tuesday afternoon.
It was the Yeowomen's leading scorer,
Maureen Coffey that netted the first Oberlin goal in the 14
th minute. Coffey registered her sixth goal of the campaign with help from senior
Taylor Swift, who setup her up for the score.
The Bison fired back with an equalizer in the 18
th minute, but the Yeowomen would not be denied. Junior
Ariana Enzerink snuck an attempt past Bison keeper, Courtney Snyder, before the break as Swift notched her second assist of the game and third of the year. Enzerink's goal in the 28
th minute sent the two sides into the halftime break with the Yeowomem on top, 2-1.
The second 35 minutes ticked by and the Yeowomen held the Bison scoreless, sending Saunder's squad to their first triumph of the 2015 campaign.
The Oberlin 11 had to fend off an aggressive Bethany side that outshot the Yeowomen, 11 to 5, with six Bison shots causing trouble for first-year keeper,
Kennedy Kline, in her second start in between the pipes. Kline finished with four stops, moving her season total to 27.
Kendra Lian also had a defensive save in the first half.
Enzerink finished with two shots, one on frame, while Coffey rifled two shots both on target.
The Yeowomen will return to conference play on the weekend when they travel south to take on the Big Red of Denison on Saturday at 11 a.m.
