GRANVILLE, Ohio – Oberlin college field hockey gave a valiant effort in a tight 3-0 loss at Denison University.
Far removed from the 9-0 and 6-0 defeats the Yeowomen suffered last year at the hands of the Big Red, the Oberlin ladies only allowed nine Denison goals in 2015. In the reverse fixture on Bailey Field, the Yeowomen fell 6-1 back in early September and improved upon that mark even more in Granville.
"We are starting to come out stronger, push forward as a group and support one another on the field," said rookie head coach
Tiffany Saunders.
The Yeowomen kept the game scoreless in the opening minutes, but the Big Red got on the bard with a goal in the 12
th from Jen Durbin.
Denison would tack on another before the end of the first 35 when Lucy Pearsall snuck a shot past junior keeper
Maggie Gossiaux.
After missing the past few outings, Gossiaux returned in good form finishing with 15 saves against the Big Red. First-year
Claire Miller helped out Gossiaux's cause with a defensive save in the loss.
Leading 2-0 at the break, it was 24 seconds into the second stanza when Denison moved out in front 3-0.
Elise Humes tacked on the final score of the match for Denison.
For the Yeowomen,
Maureen Coffey led the charge with three shots, all on goal. Junior
Ariana Enzerink followed with one shot on target.
Oberlin field hockey returns to action tomorrow as the Kenyon College Ladies roll on to campus. Action from the turf of Bailey Field is scheduled for noon.
