Granville, Ohio – Junior
Nick Wertman headed home
Adam Chazin-Gray's service from the right endline in the 102nd minute to send the Oberlin College men's soccer team back into the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament for the second time in the last three years.
Wertman's finish was his fifth of the year and gave the Yeomen a 2-1 win to secure fourth place in the final conference standings. The victory marked just the Yeomen's second win on Barclay Thomsen Field in the last decade, having last won on that pitch in 2005, 1-0.
The Yeomen took a 1-0 lead into the intermission on the strength of freshman
Trenton Bulucea's third goal of the year as he finished off a beautiful ball from
John Ingham into the lower right corner of the goal. The score broke the 0-0 stalemate in the 35
th minute.
The Big Red would find the equalizer just 34 seconds into the second half when Karch Majtenyi followed Jake Girardot's initial shot and put the rebound in past Yeomen keeper
Koryn Kraemer. However, the Yeomen freshman stood tall all game long as he finished with six saves on the afternoon.
The Big Red had a chance to go ahead in the 75
th minute as Will Kendall had a one-on-one opportunity against Kraemer that he pushed off the right post. In the 81
st minute The Big Red's Jordan Williams also had a header that was destined to find twine, but the Yeomen's
Dan Lev was right there to keep it from crossing the line and record one of the biggest team saves in recent history.
In the first overtime, Ingham had a opportunity to end things a little bit earlier for the Yeomen as
Timothy Williams sent a cross from the near side, to the right side of the box that Ingham pushed right of the frame.
In the second overtime, Oberlin took all three shots. Before Wertman's game-winner, Ingham had one that was saved by Blake Schach, while Wertman also sent another wide.
Denison finished with a 22-18 edge in shots, but had just a 7-5 margin in shots on goal. The Big Red also earned five corners, while the Yeomen attempted three.
Oberlin will enter the NCAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed with a record 11-6-1 and 5-4-0 in league. Denison's season comes to an end with a mark of 11-3-3 and 3-3-3 in the NCAC.
The Yeomen will take on the top-seeded Lords of Kenyon on Wednesday, November 4. Game time will be announced later this evening.
