OBERLIN, Ohio – It was a cold, wet morning at Bailey Field as Oberlin College field hockey opened the Homecoming festivities with a hard-fought overtime loss to the College of Wooster Fighting Scots.
Despite dominating the offensive statistics, Oberlin is left searching for their first North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the year.
The Yeowomen struck early with an 11
th minute goal from junior
Maureen Coffey at 10:18. Coffey received a corner from senior
Taylor Swift and fired a shot past Wooster keeper, Danielle Slichenmeyer to put the Yeowomen on the board.
Unfortunately, the Oberlin advantage would not last long. The Fighting Scots found the equalizer at 12:25 as Taylor Rose notched her first score of the half.
Rose doubled up with the a go ahead goal in the 18
th minute before Wooster earned their third goal of the first stanza. The Scot's Erika Womack gave Wooster a 3-1 advantage before the halftime-break with an assist from Rose.
Out of the break, Coffey helped the Yeowomen to claw back into the game with her second of the afternoon at the 41:33 mark.
Swift tied the game for the second time in the 52
nd with the help of an
Emma Broun pass in front to the Wooster goal.
The Scots stood resilient, answering with their fourth goal of the game as Rose completed her hat trick in the 55th.
Trailing late, 4-3, the Yeowomen found a bit of offensive magic from Broun with 4:43 remaining. Coffey maneuvered down into the offensive third and laid a pass to Broun who knocked the tying goal past Slichenmeyer.
Regulation would end with the scoreline locked at 4-4 despite intense offensive pressure from the Yeowomen.
The Yeowomen and Scots entered the first seven-v-seven overtime period and nearly needed the entire 15 minutes to decide a winner.
With 29 second remaining, it was Wooster's Rachel Wetzel that weaved into the Oberlin arc and wrapped a shot around first-year keeper
Kennedy Kline and into the back of the Oberlin goal bringing the match to a close.
Despite the loss, the Oberlin women outplayed Wooster in nearly all facets. Offensively, the Yeowomen finished with 24 shots, 14 on target and dominated in the offensive third, earning a staggering 18 penalty corners to the Scot's eight.
Coffey's two goals and ten shots, six on goal, led the Yeowomen in the loss. Junior forward
Ariana Enzerink notched six shots, one on target, while Swift tallied three shots, all on frame.
In her first collegiate start in net, Kline finished with a season-high nine saves in over 84 minutes of action.
The Yeowomen (0-9, 0-6 NCAC) take a break from NCAC competition and travel to Bethany (W.V.) College on Wednesday, October 6. Action from Bethany, West Virginia between the Yeowomen and Bison is slated for 4 p.m.
