Granville, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team got off to a quick start, but the match quickly turned as the Denison University Big Red defeated the Yeowomen in four sets on Tuesday night.
Oberlin won the first set 25-23, but then the Big Red completely took over, as the Yeowomen did not total 25 points in the next two sets combined, falling 25-11 and 25-12. The Big Red would finish the match with a 25-18 triumph in the fourth set.
Krista Langhans' ace in the first set clinched the point as Oberlin was in system throughout, hitting .262 in the game. However, from there it was all Denison as the Yeowomen fell out of rhythm, totaling 20 kills and 21 errors over the next three sets. By comparison, Oberlin had 15 kills against just four errors in the first set alone.
Ave Spencer and
Dana Thomas led Oberlin with nine kills each, while
Claudia Scott chipped in with seven. Scott also matched
Meredith Leung, who had 25 assists, with a team-best three aces.
Molly Powers guided the defensive attack with 16 digs, while first-year
Emily Kelkar added 11.
The Yeowomen will conclude the regular season on Saturday in Houghton, New York where they will take on SUNY Canton and Utica College.
Oberlin, which dropped to 7-15 overall and 2-6 in the NCAC, will enter the NCAC Tournament (November 6-7) as the No. 7 seed and will take on No. 2 seed Ohio Wesleyan in the opening round. The tournament will be contested on the campus of Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
