Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bishops Outlast Yeomen on a Rainy Senior Night

Oberlin, Ohio – The visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops scored in the 67th minute and that was all they needed to outlast the Oberlin College men's soccer team on a rainy Saturday night at Fred Shults Field.

It was Phoenix Neitzelt's seventh score of the season that he headed home off a setpiece that proved to be difference.

OWU finished with a 20-8 advantage in total shots, which included a 9-3 margin in shots on goal.  The Yeomen backline and keeper Koryn Kraemer were busy for much of the night, but held their own against the national power. Kraemer finished the match with eight saves in his 90 minutes of work.

Prior to the game, Oberlin celebrated its senior class with a special tribute to Sam Bernhard, Macallan Savett, Dean Schapow, John Ingham, Slade Gottlieb and Louis Naiman.

In the opening half the teams were battling through the conditions as much as they were each other.

Neither team had many dangerous opportunities in the opening frame, but the Bishops did threaten Kraemer twice. An early long-range strike by Brian Schefer was knocked down and quickly corralled by the Yeomen rookie. In the closing minutes, Mason Hoge also ripped a free kick from 30 yards out that forced Kraemer to leap and punch it over the cage.

Oberlin had an opportunity in the 13th minute as Ingham raced for a ball that was played ahead, but he was a touch late and slid into the Bishops goalie to earn a yellow card. Timothy Williams and Louis Naiman both had header attempts with Williams' going left of the goal, while Ben Farynowski scooped up Naiman's attempt.

In the second half the Yeomen put together a few promising runs, but couldn't push one across. Early in the 66th minute, Matthew Bach-Lombardo played a long ball from the far side to Ingham that he sent into the hands of Farynowski.

Ingham would have another golden opportunity go for naught as he had a chance to net the equalizer after getting space in the box, but again his strike was right at Farynowski. In the closing minutes he also sent one final attempt high of the goal.

The Bishops moved to 13-2-2 overall and remain unbeaten at 6-0-1 in the NCAC. With two games remaining, Oberlin is now 9-6-1 and 3-4-0 in league play.

The Yeomen will host Hiram College on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
