Delaware, Ohio – The Oberlin College field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking, 2-1, overtime defeat at Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday night at historic Shelby Stadium.
The Yeowomen were less than 11 minutes away from earing their first North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the season, but the Bishops fought back to steal away the win.
Ariana Enzerink gave the Yeowomen a 1-0 lead in the 44
th minute, depositing her third goal of the year on a penalty stroke. The slim lead stood up for next 21 minutes, but the Bishops would ultimately find the equalizer with just over 10 minutes left to play. Haley Savoie fired a shot off the pads of
Maggie Gossiaux, but the ball fired right back to her and Savoie's rebound-attempt snuck by the Yeowomen netminder to even the score and ultimately force extra time.
It would be another stick-back goal that proved to be the difference in overtime as Gossiaux saved Montanna Knapp's first attempt, but she followed her own shot and sent the rebound in to send the Yeowomen home heartbroken.
The Yeowomen outworked the Bishops in the opening half, finishing the session with a 6-4 edge in shots and 5-2 advantage in corners.
Oberlin earned all five of their corners in the final six minutes, with their best chance to score coming on the last one. After initializing the corner,
Taylor Swift stepped back into the field of play and took a shot that appeared to be headed for the far post, but the Bishops' Nikki Olguin was there to deny her attempt with a key defensive save to keep the match scoreless at the intermission.
Off an earlier corner,
Dillon Sebastian also put a shot on goal that Bishops' keeper Jackie Feliciano turned away. The attempt was one of three shots on goal for the Yeowomen in the first 35 minutes of action.
OWU used a big second half to finish with a 17-11 edge in shots and an 11-6 margin in corners. The Yeowomen had just one corner in the second session, while the Bishops attempted eight.
Maureen Coffey led OC with five shots – three of which were on goal. Gossiaux made seven saves in 72:25 of work.
The Yeowomen are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Wittenberg University for a 1 p.m. battle.
