Quakers Sneak Past the Yeowomen on Senior Day

Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin honored seniors Taylor Swift, Kendra Lian and Sophia Weinstein prior to the game, but the visiting Earlham College Quakers soured the celebration by escaping town with a 2-1 win over the Yeowomen on Saturday afternoon at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

Oberlin controlled the run of play for the majority of the match, but had trouble finishing in the arc. Earlham's Kate Korobkina turned away 10 of the Yeowomen's 11 shots on frame. Overall the Yeowomen out-shot Earlham 18-12 and finished with a 17-6 advantage in penalty corners.

A defensive breakdown by Oberlin led to the Quakers first goal as Megan Hut was left all alone on the near side and took a feed from Maite Turlings before sending it home just 8:03 into the match.

In the 17th minute Oberlin would find the equalizer as Maureen Coffey deposited her team-leading seventh goal of the season after weaving through the Earlham defense.

Unfortunately for the Yeowomen the Quakers would cash in what proved to be the game-winning goal just six minutes into the second half. It was Hut again who sent one past Yeowomen keeper Maggie Gossiaux after she took a pass from Kaitlyn Brunner off a corner.

Oberlin continued to fight in search of a game-tying goal, creating multiple scoring chances down the stretch. In the 63rd minute Coffey lifted a shot that was headed for the upper right 90 of the cage that sailed just inches outside of the post.

In the closing seconds Oberlin earned its final corner of the match as the clock expired, but the Quakers defense quickly squashed the threat to preserve the win.

Ariana Enzerink led the Yeowomen with nine shots, six of which were on frame. Gossiaux made seven saves in the goal to run her season total up to 145.

Oberlin will conclude the home portion of its schedule tomorrow when DePauw University comes to town for a 1 p.m. battle.
