Greencastle, Ind. – The Oberlin College men's basketball team led for majority of the game, but in the end the DePauw University Tigers were able to sneak out a 51-50 victory over the Yeomen on Saturday afternoon.
With score tied at 50 and with just five seconds left on the clock, the Tigers' Michael Onuorah drew a late whistle from the officials and was sent to the line for two. After missing the first free throw, Oberlin Head Coach
Isaiah Cavaco called a timeout to make him think about the second attempt even more.
After the break, Onuorah's second shot touched up the front of the rim and unfortunately for the Yeomen he got the proverbial 'home-town roll' to put the Tigers out in front by one. However, Oberlin had one last chance to win it as
Zach Meyers took the inbound and quickly made his way down the far side, but his 17-footer from the wing was too strong, which allowed the Tigers to escape with the win.
The Yeomen never trailed in the game until the 5:27 mark as a Bob Dillon layup made it a 44-43 DePauw advantage. The Tigers would then hold the lead until just 21 seconds remained as
Jack Poyle tied the game at 50 with a clutch 3-pointer from deep in the far corner.
With the shot clock off, DePauw would allow some time to tick away before Onuorah made an aggressive drive in the lane and threw up a wild shot that flew over the hoop. After nearly two full seconds of the teams battling for the rebound, a whistle sounded with Oberlin being cited for a blocking foul on Onuorah's drive.
Oberlin controlled the action throughout the first half, leading by as many as 10, 26-16, before taking a 28-22 cushion into the locker room.
The Yeomen would increase the margin back out to 10, 35-25, at the 16:49 mark, but the Tigers would not go away without a fight, using a 9-0 spurt over the next four minutes to get within one. From that point on no more than five points would separate the two teams the rest of the way.
A layup from
Zach Moo Young made it a 43-39 game with 8:28 to go, but the Yeomen would go scoreless for the next three minutes, which opened the door for DePauw to take the lead.
Nathan Cohen was the lone Yeoman in double figures as he finished with 10 points.
Randy Ollie ripped down a game-high 11 rebounds to accompany his seven points, while Poyle finished with eight points off the bench as he continues to work his way back from injury.
The loss dropped the Yeomen to 8-11 overall and 4-8 in the NCAC. DePauw moved to 13-6 and 6-6 in the NCAC.
Oberlin will be back in action on Wednesday night when it travels to Denison University. Tip-time is set for 6 p.m.
