Oberlin, Ohio – Junior big man
Randy Ollie finished with a career-high 22 points as Oberlin men's basketball topped the Lords of Kenyon College, 62-50, on Wednesday night from Philips Gymnasium.
Ollie had a strong night in the paint against a physical Lords' defense as the 6-foot-9 center shot 8-of-11 from the floor and perfect 6-of-6 from the line. Ollie missed a near double-double opportunity finishing with eight rebounds.
Following a career-high performance of his own, sophomore
Nathan Cohen dropped 17 points on 8-of-16 shooting against the Lords.
The first stanza was a back-and-forth affair with the Yeomen in control for most of the opening frame. A pair of free throws from Ollie gave the Yeomen their first double-figure lead of the game, 17-6, at the 9:57 mark.
In the following minutes, the Lords trimmed the Yeomen's advantage to single digits until an electrifying dunk from Ollie extended the Oberlin lead to 10, 25-15. An Ollie put-back bucket propelled the Yeomen to a 12-point lead before Kenyon sliced the margin to six with 1:48 remaining in the first. With under a minute to play, a successful pair of free throws from junior
Matt Walker led to the Lords final possession of the half. Kenyon's John Bray went for a jumper with mere seconds on the clock, Walker stuffed the Lord center, leaving
Zach Meyers to scoop the defensive rebound. Meyers fed Cohen on an outlet pass and he laid in a teardrop layup to close the half at the buzzer.
After taking a 10-point advantage, 31-21, into the half, the Yeomen flirted with a double-digit lead for the entire second half. After leading by at least three possessions for a majority of the second half, the Yeomen claimed a 14-point lead, 56-42, on a Cohen layup with 2:47 left to play to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
The win pushes Head Coach
Isaiah Cavaco's crew to 8-10 overall and 4-7 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The eight victories for the Yeomen mark the most in a season since 1991-92 when the team finished 14-10.
Next up, the Oberlin men will travel to Greencastle, Indiana and the campus of DePauw University. Action between the Tigers and the Yeomen is scheduled for 3 p.m. as the later half of a women's-men's double-header.
