Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team forced 24 turnovers and held the visiting Grove City College Wolverines to just 30-percent shooting en route to earning a 77-50 victory at Philips Gym on Monday night.
Four different Yeomen scored in double figures, including the bench-bunch duo of
Austin Little and
Ian Campbell as they combined for 26 points. Center
Randy Ollie was 5-of-6 from the floor and matched Little with a team-high 14 points. Sophomore
Jack Poyle reached double digits for the fifth time this season as he finished with 13 points, while Campbell checked in with a career-high 12 points on 3-of-4 shooting and a 4-of-4 effort at the free throw line.
The Yeomen, who moved to 4-3 with the win, opened the game on a 12-0 run and held the Wolverines scoreless for nearly the first eight minutes of the contest. A Poyle triple-hit with 3:38 left in the opening half gave the Yeomen a 30-11 lead. They would extend their margin out to as many as 25 before heading into the locker room with a 40-17 half-time advantage.
The second half was much more closely contested but the Wolverines never really threatened to a point where the eventual outcome was ever in doubt. Early in the stanza Oberlin widen the gap to 30, 55-25, on a
Jesse Neugarten fast-break layup. Over the next 10 minutes of play Grove City was able to shrink the deficient to 20 at 69-49, but would get no closer the rest of the way.
Oberlin made 25-of-54 shots in the game, shooting at a 46.3-percent clip. The Yeomen's offense was in rhythm for most of the evening as they were credited with 22 assists on the 25 makes.
Miles Gueno dished out a career-high five helpers, while
Nathan Cohen also matched career-highs with five assists and seven rebounds.
The Yeomen outscored the Wolverines 30-14 in the paint and had a 15-0 advantage in fast-break points.
A game-high 15 points from Mitch Marmelstein led Grove City, which fell to 4-4 with the loss.
Oberlin has a short turnaround as it returns to conference play on Wednesday night at home against Denison University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
