Oberlin, Ohio – It wasn't pretty, but in the end it will go down as a win as the Oberlin College men's basketball team earned a 53-42 victory over the visiting Earlham College Quakers on Tuesday night at Philips Gym.
Sophomore
Jack Poyle scored 12 of his team-high 14 points in the second half as he connected on three 3-pointers in the session to help secure the win.
Randy Ollie was the only other Yeomen in double figures as he finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Yeomen opened the game on a 9-0 run, but from that point on their offense was mostly stagnant for the remainder of the first half. The Quakers methodically worked their way back into the game, using an 11-1 run over the final 5:51 of the half to tie the game at 19 going into the intermission.
Oberlin started the second half the same way it started the game – opening the frame on a 10-0 run that featured two Poyle triple-hits. An Ollie layup with 12:49 to go would give the Yeomen an 11-point lead at 33-22 and their cushion would never shrink below that margin the rest of the way.
The Yeomen's defense held the Quakers to just nine second-half points for 17:30 of the frame. Earlham did not register its 10
th point of the half until just 2:30 remained as Patrick Hawkins made a free throw attempt.
Oberlin shot 47.6-percent (20-of-42) from the floor, while Earlham checked in at 38.3-percent (18-of-47) in the loss.
The Yeomen, who moved to 3-1, will be back in action on Wednesday, December 3 at Kenyon College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
