Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team started off slow and was unable to recover as the visiting Big Red of Denison University defeated the Yeowomen in straight sets on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.
Denison won the first two sets without much of a challenge, evident by the respective 25-17 and 25-11 scorelines. However, the Yeowomen fought back in the third, as things were nip-and-tuck throughout. After falling behind by four points late, the Yeowomen battled to extend the match, but ultimately fell 26-24.
Oberlin struggled to find its offensive rhythm, hitting just .026 as a team for the match with 24 kills and 21 errors. Denison was much cleaner throughout the evening, registering 34 kills against just 11 errors for a .221 hitting percentage.
Claudia Scott led the Yeowomen attack with eight kills, but she too was plagued by eight errors.
Ave Spencer sent down seven of her 30 swings to help bolster the offense.
Molly Powers scooped up 18 digs in the back and also added a team-high four service aces.
Meredith Leung aided the effort with 12 digs, 19 assists, two kills and an ace.
The Yeowomen will back in action on Saturday when they host Albion College at 11 a.m. followed by Wilmington College at 3 p.m.
