Oberlin, Ohio – The Yeowomen hosted Albion College and Wilmington College on Saturday offered up two 3-1 defeats to both visiting squads to move to 8-14 on the year.
Their matchup with Albion, the Yeowomen honored their senior,
Christine Antonsen.
Antonsen let loose the first serve of the day against the Brits. Although the Yeowomen fell behind early in the first set, they rallied behind the offense of junior
Maddy Dunn.
Dunn led the Yeowomen with 14 kills against the Britons while the trio of
Ave Spencer,
Claudia Scott and
Hannah Tyburski all registered double digit kills. After rallying from behind in the first, Oberlin controlled the second set and moved on to the third with a 25-21 triumph.
The third was a back and forth battle. The Brits rallied to pull the game to 22-21. The see-saw play continued as the two sides pushed the score even at 25-25 before Albion took the next two points and the third set, 27-25.
The Yeowomen rebounded in the fourth by taking control early and forcing an Albion timeout with the score line at 14-7 in Oberlin's favor. A big kill from Dunn capped off a 5-3 run from the Yeowomen, moving the score to 19-10 before the Brits stepped it up offensively.
An 8-4 swing from Albion pushed the score to 23-18 until first year
Dana Thomas earned match point with a well-placed, hard-struck kill. Scott finished off the Britons with a spectacular kill, earning the Oberlin ladies their first victory of the day.
The Yeowomen then squared off with the Wilmington College Quakers in the second leg of their double header. Oberlin jumped out to a 15-10 before Wilmington burnt a timeout in an attempt to break junior
Shavonne Stanek's serve. Stanek served up three more points for the Yeowomen as they went on to comfortably take the first set, 25-18.
The second set was all Oberlin as the Yeowomen cruised to a dominating 25-8 victory. With a momentary lapse in concentration third set went to the Quakers, 18-25, forcing a fourth.
Oberlin was quick to double up the Quakers with a 14-7 lead early on. The Yeowomen maintained a steady lead, but the Quakers kept attempting to chip away. The Oberlin ladies forced match point at 24-13 but the Quakers constructed a five point rally.
Junior defensive specialist
Molly Powers ended any chance at a comeback with a match-winning kill to close out the match.
On the day, Dunn led the Yeowomen with 24 combined kills, followed by Spencer's 23-kill performance. Tyburski and Scott both finished with 19 kills on Saturday.
Sophomore setter Meeredith Leung was a mainstay for the Yeowomen as she combined for 95 assists in two matches. Leung accounted for all but seven assists against the Brits and Quakers.
Defensively, junior libero
Molly Powers led Oberlin with a combined 44 digs.
The Yeowomen return to action on Saturday, October 18 when they host the Wittenberg Tigers in North Coast Athletic Conference competiton. Action from Philips Gymnasium is slated for 11 a.m.
