Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team picked up its first North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the season, defeating the visiting Kenyon College Ladies in four sets on Friday evening at Philips Gym.
The Yeowomen fended off two late runs in the first two sets to win both 25-23, before dropping the third set 25-19. However, the Yeowomen regrouped and used a charge midway through the fourth set to claim the match with a 25-18 win.
Sophomore
Hannah Tyburski led Oberlin's diverse offensive attack with 13 kills on 37 swings, while
Dana Thomas hit an impressive .227 with nine kills on 22 attempts.
Three Yeowomen registered double digit digs with
Molly Powers finishing a game-high 20.
Ave Spencer and
Meredith Leung also had impressive lines as Spencer sent down eight kills to go along with 12 digs. Leung checked in with 38 assists, 16 digs and six kills on just 12 attempts.
In the first set the Yeowomen held a 20-13 lead before the Ladies rallied to get within one a 24-23. Luckily, a Kenyon error would clinch the game for Oberlin.
In the second set the two foes were tied at 15 before Oberlin pulled away to take a 23-16 advantage. Once again the Ladies would fight to make it 24-23, but Spencer would come through with one of her eight kills to finish the job.
After an impressive third set, the Ladies used that momentum to build an early 10-7 lead in the fourth and would later increase their margin to 16-12. However, the Yeowomen were able to settle down, using an 8-1 spurt to go out in front 20-17. Following just one more point from the Ladies, the Yeowomen would pour it on with five straight points to end the match. Two aces from
Krista Langhans and kills from Tyburski and Leung helped complete the victory.
Oberlin finished with 12 aces as a team with Powers dropping in a game-high five. Langhans also aided the cause with three.
The Yeowomen moved to 10-15 overall and 1-5 in the NCAC with the win. Kenyon fell to 5-21 and 0-6 in the league.
Oberlin has a short turn around as it goes right back to work tomorrow afternoon at Wooster. The first serve is set for 1 p.m.
