Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College volleyball team earned a commanding four-set victory over Case Western Reserve on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.
The Yeowomen won the first set 25-21, but dropped the second 25-16 before regrouping to win 25-14 and 26-24. The victory marked the first time the Yeowomen have beaten the Spartans since 2008 -- snapping an eight-match skid --with the last six coming in the form of Case Western sweeps.
Oberlin put together one of its best all-around efforts of the season as three players had double-digit kills. First-year
Claudia Scott finished with a career-high 16 kills, hitting .270 for the match.
Ave Spencer added 13 kills on 46 swings, while
Hannah Tyburski chipped in with 11.
In the tightly contested fourth set the Spartans and Yeowomen were deadlocked at 24 when Spencer deposited one of her 13 kills. Oberlin then clinched the match on a ball handling error by the Spartans.
Oberlin's offense had great tempo throughout the night as
Meredith Leung dished out 45 assists and added five kills. Junior
Molly Powers also turned in her best game of the season, recording 32 digs to go along with four aces.
Rookie
Dana Thomas added nine kills on 19 attempts in the triumph.
Oberlin moved 9-15 with the win while Case Western dropped to 15-9.
The Yeowomen will conclude the home portion of their schedule on Friday night when Kenyon College comes to town for a 7 p.m. showdown.
