Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team earned a convincing 2-1 decision over the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots on Wednesday night at Fred Shults Field.
The victory gave the Yeomen an all-important three points in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings as they ran their record to 5-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the NCAC. Wooster dropped to 3-8-1 and 0-4-0 in the league play.
Oberlin controlled the run of play throughout, evident by a 22-5 margin in shots, which included a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Yeomen applied the pressure from the onset, triggering four shots within the first 15 minutes. At the 7:24 mark
Nick Wertman tried to catch the keeper pushed up out of position, but his long-distance strike from 35-yards out sailed just high of the crossbar.
However, it wouldn't be much longer before the Yeomen got on the board as sophomore
Sam Weiss volleyed in a free kick service off the foot of
Matthew Bach-Lombardo that was redirected by
John Ingham before finding its way towards Weiss to give the Yeomen 1-0 lead in the 17
th minute.
Oberlin's relentless pressure continued throughout the stanza, as they would strike once again in the 37
th minute as first-year
Timothy Williams finished off a beautifully designed combination play with himself on the receiving end of feeds from
Remi Schneider and
Louis Naiman.
Trailing 2-0 in the second half, the Scots threatened to cut the lead in half as Aleksi Pelkonen snuck behind the Yeomen rearguard, but had his shot attempt denied by
Oidie Kuijpers.
In the 70
th minute the Yeomen had two promising chances as defensemen
Sam Bernhard pushed up and sent a piercing strike to the upper right-90 that was turned away on a dive by Scots' keeper Daniel Quinn. On the ensuing corner kick, Weiss had a look for his second goal of the game, but Quinn also turned that away.
Later in the period the Yeomen initiated a strong counterattack that resulted in Ingham escaping free on the far side and his left-footed kick got past Quinn, but a Scots defender was there on the back post to turn away the shot.
The Scots would eventually get on the board in the 75
th minute on a Matt Parmelee goal with the help of a Marcus Hunt assist.
Late in the game in the 84
th minute, Ingham sent a seed off the post and then had his rebound fly high. Schenider also had a look on frame, but Quinn challenged him at the point of attack to make the save. Luckily neither goal was needed as the Yeomen earned a critical conference win.
The Yeomen return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host DePauw University at 1:30 p.m.
