Hiram, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's soccer team was unable to generate enough firepower to get past the Hiram College Terriers, settling for a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Henry Field.
With the result the Yeomen's record moved to 4-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the NCAC. They are now winless in their last four matches with two ties and two losses. Hiram moved to 6-6-1 and 1-2-1 in league play. The Yeomen are also 0-3-2 over their last five visits to Hiram with their last victory coming in 2005.
The Terriers controlled the run of play in the first 45-minute session, holding the Yeomen to just three shots in the stanza.
Hiram grabbed a 1-0 lead on Kyle Watson's diving header into the lower left corner of the goal as he finished off a cross into the box from Richie Webb in the 16
th minute.
However, the game would change in the second half as the Yeomen put together some promising runs and ultimately wore down the Terriers. Their spirited work resulted in them adding the equalizer in the 71
st minute. It was junior
John Ingham who cashed in his team-leading sixth goal of the year with the help of a
Nick Wertman assist to square the match.
It would remain 1-1 after 90 minutes, forcing the Yeomen into their second extra-time match in a row and third in their last four battles.
Right off the rip in the first overtime Wertman tried to send the Yeomen home happy, but Hiram keeper Luke Wilhelm denied his free kick shot. Ingham also had a promising attempt late that was turned away by Wilhelm.
In the second overtime, Hiram's Ryan Karmarz had two chances, but his first was saved by
Oidie Kuijpers, while his second flew wide right of the goal.
Hiram finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The Terriers also earned four corners compared to Oberlin's one. The game was physical on both sides as seven yellows were shown, with three being directed towards the Yeomen. Both teams also combined for 35 fouls.
Kuijpers made five saves in his 110 minutes of work in goal.
Oberlin returns home to open a three-match homestand starting on Wednesday night against Wooster. The first touch is set for 7 p.m.
