Chillicothe, Ohio – The season for the Oberlin College baseball team came to an end on Friday afternoon as the Allegheny College Gators rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth to upend the Yeomen, 6-5, in the semifinals of the NCAC Championship Tournament.

The Yeomen took a 5-3 lead into the eighth, but from there things unraveled. Two hits to start the inning put runners on the corners with nobody out. Then a tailor-made double-play opportunity was not executed, which allowed one run to score without an out being recorded.

With runners on first and second, the Gators laid down a sacrifice bunt attempt, but yet another Oberlin fielding miscue allowed a run to score all the way from second to tie the game at 5-5. With a runner left on third, Frank Triozzi would drop down an RBI-bunt single to give the Gators the lead.

Rookie Jesse Kohler would come out of the bullpen to get out of the inning as he was aided by a caught stealing and a key double play to limit the damage and give the Yeomen a chance.

In the top of the ninth, senior Robin Witjes would provide the Yeomen with a glimmer of hope with a one-out single to center and would later advance to second on a groundout by pinch hitter Daniel Baldocchi. Unfortunately, Gators' reliever Steven Ramsdell would induce another groundout to end the game and the season for the Yeomen.

Oberlin jumped on the Gators in the first inning with a pair of runs as junior Mike McDonald roped a two-run double to the gap in right center. It would remain 2-0 until the fifth when Mitch Novak would add a two-out RBI single back up the middle to make it 3-0.

Yeomen starter Mattie DeDoes cruised through the front four innings, but Allegheny would use two hits, a wild pitch and walk to score two runs in the fifth. DeDoes would leave after the fifth allowing just the two runs on five hits.

In the top of the sixth the Yeomen would extend the lead back out to three at 5-2 when rookie Blaise Dolcemaschio laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Eric Knight.  However, the Gators would push one across in the seventh to setup their come-from-behind eighth.

The Yeomen end the season at 22-21 overall, which is a new school record. The team bids a farewell to seniors Eric Knight and Robin Witjes. Juniors Sean Cohen and Sam Sharpe also played the final games of their respective Yeomen careers as they are attending Columbia University next year.
