Wooster, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team had a 3-0 lead on the College of Wooster in game one, but the Scots scored six unanswered runs to win 6-3 before going on to take the nightcap 5-1 to complete the sweep of the Yeomen.
The Yeomen jumped on the Scots in the second by scoring all three of their runs with two outs. Sophomore
Zach Jaspers came through with a single to plate
Max Phinney, who led off the inning with a single of his own. Leadoff man
Ben Kauder followed with a two-run single through the left that sent Jaspers and freshman
Steve DiNanno across the dish.
Yeomen starter
Grady Campion got through the Scots lineup rather quickly in the first and second, but ran into some trouble in the third. A pair of walks to start the frame came back to haunt him as Wooster followed with a pair of hits and sac fly to get things back to even at three all.
The Yeomen would go down in order in both the fourth and fifth and then
Baseball America's Division III Preseason Player of the Year Greg Van Horn would break the tie with a solo home run in the fifth. The Scots tacked on two more in the sixth courtesy of Jonathan Ray's two run home run.
After the big second inning, the Yeomen managed just one hit the rest of the way as Wooster hurler Justin McDowell (5-1) went the distance and fanned seven.
Campion (1-1) took the loss as he allowed eight hits to go along with two strikeouts in his six innings of work.
In game two Head Coach
Adrian Abrahamowicz elected to send out senior
Phil Brua to the bump. Normally Oberlin's closer, Brua was touched up for three runs in the first before settling down nicely. Unfortunately, the three-spot was all the Scots needed to earn the win.
Wooster used three hits and a walk to jump on the Yeomen early, but Brua bounced back by shutting down the Scots in order in the second and third. However, the Scots manufactured single tallies in the fourth and fifth.
In the second inning the Yeomen had runners on the corners with two down, but Phinney got cut down at the plate as Oberlin was trying to execute a double steal play.
From that point Oberlin could not really get anything going as Matt Barnes (4-0) was dealing for the Scots. He allowed just five hits while walking none and striking out eight.
OC plated its only run of the game in the seventh as
Brandon Cantrill led off the inning with a double and would later score on a wild pitch.
Brua suffered the loss and fell to 1-4 on the year. He worked five innings and allowed just six hits, while racking up four punchouts.
The Yeomen (10-12, 1-5 NCAC) will finally have their home opener tomorrow as Denison University comes to town for a critical conference clash. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 1 p.m.
