Delaware, Ohio –
The Oberlin College baseball team concluded North Coast Athletic Conference play by dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon. The Bishops took game one 4-2 and followed with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.

After sweeping Kenyon on April 17, the Yeomen dropped four out of their last five conference games to finish NCAC play at 5-10. The Bishops improved to 20-12 overall and 10-4 in the league.

In game one two costly errors resulted in three of the Bishops four runs. Seniors Ben Kauder and Ben Puterbaugh led the offense with two hits each. Classmate Grady Campion (2-3) was the tough-luck loser as he scattered seven hits over 5.1 innings of work. He walked one and struck out one, and just one of his three runs allowed was earned.

The Yeomen struck first with a run in the top of the first inning as Kauder got the game started with a leadoff single and later scored on a sac fly by Puterbaugh.

An Oberlin error jumped started things for the Bishops in the bottom of the second and two hits later they would have a 2-1 lead.

In the third the Kauder-Puterbaugh combination came up big again as Kauder came through with a two-put single middle and eventually would come around to score and tie the game on Puterbaugh's single to left.

The score would remain tied until the home half of the sixth. Phil Brua came in to pitch with one out and one on. Following his arrival a single to right by Nathan Strome coupled with an error in the outfield allowed Steve Gaydos to score all the way from first on the play. Another two-out single resulted in Strome scoring from second base.

After leaving two runners stranded in the sixth, Oberlin went down in order in the seventh. Kevin Schindler went the distance for the Bishops as he ran his record to 6-2 on the year. He registered five punchouts and walked just one.

In game two the Yeomen started the same way by scoring a run in the top of the first, but eventually were plagued by a six-run fifth inning that proved to be the difference.

Rookie Mike McDonald put the Yeomen on the board first with his team-leading third home run of the season. Oberlin had three hits in the third that resulted in another run coming across, but a caught stealing put an end to a potential rally.

A leadoff triple by Bishops resulted in them making it a 2-1 game after two complete. It would stay the way until the disaster unfolded in the home half of the fifth.

Oberlin starter Ryan Mouch was cruising along as he only allowed two hits while striking out five through the front four innings. A single, error and double resulted in him being lifted in favor of Brua. The senior sidearmer was greeted rather rudely as the Bishops belted out three straights hits off of him which resulted in four more runs to come across the dish. The last run of the inning scored a wild pitch.

Mouch (1-1) took the loss despite walking none. Of the Bishops four runs credited two him, three were earned.

The Yeomen tried to answer back in the sixth, but left the bases loaded.

Mason Farr (4-2) got the win as he worked 5.2 innings that saw him sprinkle seven Yeomen hits while allowing just two earned runs to go along with two walks.

Oberlin (14-19, 5-10 NCAC) is slated to return to action on Tuesday afternoon at Ohio Northern University. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
