Chillicothe, Ohio – Senior
Ben Puterbaugh became Oberlin's all-time hits leader as the Yeomen came-from-behind to beat Ohio Christian 7-6 before falling to Baldwin-Wallace College 6-3 on Saturday afternoon.
After going 1-for-4 in the opener against OCU, Puterbuagh went 4-for-4 with a double, walk and RBI in the loss to the Yellow Jackets. Puterbaugh, who now has 143 hits in his career, surpasses Zach Pretzer who had 142 hits between 2000-2003.
Against B-W the freshman pairing of
Steve DiNanno and
Mike McDonald played a role in Oberlin's first run of the game as McDonald came through with a two-out double and later scored on DiNanno's single. Puterbaugh's RBI double would make it 2-0 going into the home-half of the fifth.
In the fifth the Yellow Jackets would finally get to starter
Eric Knight as three hits and one critical error resulted in three runs coming across in the bottom of the frame. Another OC miscue resulted in another run in the sixth to make it a 4-2 game. Knight would take the loss after working six strong innings that saw him allow just five hits and one earned run.
The Yeomen would add a single tally in the seventh on a sac fly by
Zachary Kisley, but would leave the bases loaded. All in all the Yeomen left a small village on the base paths with 14 being stranded in the contest.
Baldwin-Wallace (6-4) would add two more tallies in the eighth to put things away for good.
Against the Trailblazers the Yeomen entered the ninth down one, but were able to rally for their first walk-off win of the season.
Zach Jaspers got things going with a pinch-hit single and would go to second on a sac bunt by
Ben Kauder. Back-to-back hit by pitches would load the bases for senior
Max Phinney who would send in the tying run on a groundout. The winning run came across just one play later as an error by the third baseman allowed Puterbaugh to score.
The Yeomen bullpen was simply lights out as freshman
Drew Karlin and senior
Phil Brua combined to pitch five scoreless innings. Karlin worked 2.1 innings and struckout six straight at one point. Brua worked the final 2.2 innings and allowed just two hits while fanning three.
Oberlin starter
Jason James battled control issues throughout as he walked five and hit two in four innings. However he did register six punchouts and allowed just three hits.
The Yeomen trailed 6-1 going into the fifth but they plated a single tally in the frame and added three more in the sixth to get back to even. Kauder, Kisley, and
Kevin Verne all had RBI's during the comeback.
The Yeomen will hope to get some revenge on the Yellow Jackets as the two teams will square off in a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11 a.m.
