Meadville, Pa. - Junior
Phil Brua pitched a two-hit complete-game shutout in the nightcap against Allegheny College to keep the Oberlin College baseball team alive for a postseason berth in the NCAC Tournament. After dropping game one 9-5, the Yeomen outlasted the Gators 1-0 to set the school record for wins.
Oberlin, which is now 18-16 overall and 8-6 in the NCAC East, must sweep tomorrow's doubleheader in order to qualify for its first-ever NCAC Tournament appearance. The 18 wins by the Yeomen surpasses that of the 2007 squad that finished 17-23 overall. The eight conference wins is also the most since 1986 when Oberlin finished 9-11 in league play.
Brua (6-2) was simply sensational as he took a no-hitter into sixth as he tossed 5.2 innings of hitless ball before giving up a single. The Avon, Ohio, native would allow just one more hit the rest of the way and register eight punchouts in the gem.
The Yeomen managed to get Brua the lone run he needed in third inning as a two-out single by number nine hitter
Matt Fish marked the Yeomen's first hit of the game. This brought
Ben Puterbaugh to the plate, who was batting in the leadoff spot for the first time all season. The junior from Canton, Ohio, would not disappoint as he made Head Coach
Eric Lahetta look like a genius with the line-up switch - belting a single to centerfield and miss play in the outfield allowed Fish to score all the way from first base for the lone run of the game.
The pitching was at premium on both sides as Matt Dishong was the tough-luck loser with 13 strikeouts and just three hits allowed.
In the lid-lifter, the Yeomen scratched out a run in to the top of the first, but Allegheny responded in the home-half of the inning with three straight two-out singles that resulted in three runs.
Once again the Yeomen would add a single tally in the second, courtesy of single by Fish to score Brua. Unfortunately, the Yeomen lead was short-lived as the Gators used four hits and one Oberlin error to post four runs in the bottom of the third. The big hit in the inning came courtesy of Phil Morrissette who belted a three-run home run.
The Yeomen were threatening in the fourth with three straight singles start the inning that led to one run. However, following a sac bunt to move runners to second and third, Gators' pitcher David Strawser was able to strikeout the next two hitters to get out of the jam.
OC took advantage of an Allegheny error to plate another run and make it a 7-4 game with two innings left to play, but the Gators would add two insurance runs in the sixth, while Oberlin would add just one more run in the seventh on a double by
Brandon Cantrill.
Tossing his second complete game loss in a row, Cantrill gave up 12 hits and eight earned runs.
These same two teams will complete the four-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch of the double-dip is set for high noon. Fans will be able to follow all of the action via
