Oberlin, Ohio – The 1-2 punch of Justin McDowell and Matt Barnes cooled off the hot bats of the Oberlin College baseball team as the duo led the visiting College of Wooster Scots to a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon by the scores of 7-0 and 11-0.
The Yeomen, who were leading the NCAC in hitting with a .343-team batting average coming into today, managed just seven hits in the sweep to the No. 6 ranked Scots.
McDowell, who was an NCAA All-American in 2009 while helping Wooster become national runner-ups, needed just 83 pitches to get through the Yeomen line-up for the complete game victory. He allowed just four hits while striking out 10 along the way.
However, Oberlin starter
Brandon Cantrill held his own on the mound and pitched toe-to-toe with McDowell as he recorded the first complete game of the season for the Yeomen. The Collins, Ohio, native scattered seven hits while walking two and fanning two through 109 pitches. Out of the seven runs the Scots scored just three were earned.
In the second inning, a two-out error resulted in Wooster (23-7, 7-3 NCAC East) scoring three unearned runs.
In the third the Scots plated two more runs as two more OC miscues resulted in the second run of the frame to come across.
The best chance the Yeomen had to score came in the first inning as singles down the right field line by
Jason James and
Ben Puterbaugh put runners on the corners with just one out, but Puterbaugh got picked off and Cantrill struck out swinging to end the threat.
In the nightcap
Grady Campion turned in a gutsy effort on the mound as he tossed five plus innings and allowed just four earned runs.
Barnes matched McDowell with 10 punchouts as 73 of his 112 pitches went for strikes.
An error, infield hit, sac fly and RBI groundout in the second resulted in two runs for the Scots. They added single tallies in the third and fourth and a pair in the sixth before busting out a five spot in the sixth.
Cantrill was the only Yeomen to have two hits on the day.
First-place in the NCAC East will be on the line when these same two teams go right back at it with another twinbill tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Currently there is a three-way tie at the top of the standings with Wooster, Oberlin, Allegheny all sitting at 7-3 in league play.
