Holland, Mich. – Senior
Joanna Johnson remained unbeaten as she won the 2010 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship meet, however, the Yeowomen missed an automatic berth to nationals by placing fourth as a team with 149 points.
Johnson checked in at 21:14, which was 13 seconds faster than second-place finisher Alison Steinbrunner of Ohio Northern University.
Joining Johnson as an all-region performer was first-year standout
Molly Martorella as she finished 16th overall with a mark of 22:31.9.
“Everyone ran well and competed hard,” Head Coach
Ray Appenheimer said. “I am just hoping this isn't going to be our last race of the season.”
By placing fourth the Yeowomen are in consideration for an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship. “I think it is really going to come down to the final one or two spots and hopefully we find ourselves in the field,” Appenheimer added.
With two Yeowomen already finished, the first of a trio of Oberlin harriers to come through the chute was sophomore
Sara Terashima as she completed the 6K course in 23:05.8, finishing 43rd overall. Teammate
Caroline Martin followed in close behind at 23:07.7 to finish one spot back. The final Yeowoman of the pack was sophomore
Kristina Witcher who stopped the clock at 23:08.9 to end in 45th place.
Oberlin will find out its championship fate from the NCAA tomorrow afternoon.
