Springfield, Ohio – The Oberlin College softball team led 2-1 going into the bottom of seventh inning, but Wittenberg scored two times for a 3-2 walk-off win in game one, and also escaped with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
Textbook softball by the Tigers in the lid-lifter earned them the win as a single and walk to start the inning put them in business and after a sac bunt to move the runners into scoring position, Haley Gerken's game-winning double left the Yeowomen heartbroken.
“We played so well and fought really hard in both games,” head coach Adrienne Davis said. “Sure it hurts we weren't able to get out of here with at least one win, but we played some sound softball today.”
Oberlin took advantage of an error and a wild pitch to score two runs in the fifth, which featured a double by
Lauren Luther and a single by
Michelle Zanni.
After a single tally in the sixth by the Tigers, Oberlin had a chance to add an insurance run in the seventh as first-year
Kristen Dix hit a two-out triple, but was left stranded.
Rookies
Kristine Kuchta and
Sara Gaines also had hits in the game.
In the game two, Oberlin notched its only run of the contest in the top of the first on a single by
Julia Chauvin that sent Zanni across the dish.
The Tigers would respond with a run of their own in the home-half of the first and added another tally in the second, which would stand up the rest of the way for their second one-run win of the day.
Oberlin had seven hits in the game, but couldn't string any of them together to push across another run. The Yeowomen had one hit in innings two through fourth, but their best chance to score came in the sixth.
Katie Baldonieri and
Ruth Allanbrook each had hits in the inning, but were left stranded on the corners.
After the first two innings,
Jen Sees didn't allow a single base runner as she was the tough-luck-loser after allowing just four hits.
Oberlin steps out of conference to welcome local rival Case Western Reserve to town on Monday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. and fans can follow all of the action via
